Technology can be used as a tool for learning, especially in reading and writing. With the students now using their own laptops in class, I encourage them to continue using the same programs at home.
Use the TDSB Virtual Library to access thousands of books and resources online. There are programs that will even read the book to the student.
Keep the program’s taskbar open at the top of your computer screen.
This program can be used when reading anything online. For example, if you are reading about soccer on an online encyclopedia, highlight the text you want to read, press the play button and the computer will highlight/read the text to you aloud! You can even cut the text you found online and paste into a word document. It will read it back to you there.
If you are writing, open a Word document and use the word prediction tool to help you spell words as you write. Or, have the program read back your writing to you. This can help you edit your work.
The ELMO
In the classroom, we are also using an ELMO device. This piece of technology captures an item and reflects it onto a large projection screen. Tyja already used it to share his vacation journal with the class. It was great to see his writing up on a big screen.
